Historical values
rumah Turi was originally a traditional family home located in kampung Turisari in central Solo. Just like typical village houses, this house was comprised of:
- A main building called joglo (semi public area) and a latar (yard for children playing and people interacting with others)
- A garden (kebon) for outdoor activities and grow productive plants, such as vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices (empon-empon), as well as flowers
- A master bedroom(dalem) and children’s bedroom (gandhok)
- An open bathing area (senthong) and paringgitan, which no longer exist in the revamped construction
At rumah Turi, the joglo, latar andkebon have been re-designed to become a compact unit without undermining the essential functions of these spaces. In designing rumah Turi, some slight adjustments were made to the original layout of the house:
- The joglo is represented by the front space of the parking area and garden, while kedai Turi (the restaurant) functions as a public dining hall and living room, library, and internet centre. At the back is a space that includes a multi-function stage suitable for cultural activities and performances.
- In the kebon, we have created a vertical garden for vegetables and herbal medicine plants.
- The dalem is represented by the intimately-designed guest rooms.
Building materials
Almost all timber used in the construction of rumah Turi is recycled. Most of it originates from the remains of the Sheraton Yogyakarta after it was destroyed by the devastating earthquake of 2006.
Efficiency measures
WATER. Gray water and rainwater are filtered successively in a special tank placed below the garden and then again through a mechanical process so that they can be utilized again to water the garden, to make artificial rain, and to flush toilets. When the surge tanks are full, surplus water is directed to the neighbourhood sewer system.
HEATING. We use solar panels to heat water on the rooftop, which then gravitates naturally to the rooms. This relieves the need of electricity used for heating and for pumping the water.
ENERGY. Almost all lamps are LEDs (Light Emitting Diode), which only use 20-30% of electricity compared to halogen and standard lightbulbs.
COOLING. rumah Turi has been designed in such a way that its interior is ventilated by natural air flow, reducing the heat that is typical of this part of the world. Cross ventilation below the roof and in each room keeps these spaces cool during the day, and the air always crisp. The roof garden and artificial rain also helps cool the temperature surrounding this lovely lodging.
LOCAL GROWTH. The landscape of rumah Turi consists of “hanging” gardens with vegetables (used for cooking in kedai Turi), medicinal plants and fruits and flowers. The vertical garden also helps filter the air and titivate the open space.
